Pilates for Beginners: What to Expect in Your First Class

Published

So you’ve decided to try Pilates. Maybe a friend won’t stop talking about it, maybe you’ve seen the reformer machine online and felt equal parts curious and intimidated. Either way, welcome — and take a breath. Walking into a new studio for the first time can feel like a lot, but Pilates for beginners is designed to meet you exactly where you are.

This is a complete, friendly guide to your first Pilates class at Pilatopia, our women-only boutique studio in Al Narjis, Riyadh. By the end, you’ll know what to wear, what to bring, what actually happens in the room, and why almost everyone leaves their first session feeling taller, calmer, and a little proud of themselves.

Where Every Beginner Starts: The Foundation Class

At Pilatopia, every new member begins with one specific class: the Foundation class. It’s a required 50-minute introduction to the reformer machine, and it exists for a simple reason — the reformer is wonderful, but it’s also new equipment, and you deserve to understand it before you flow through a full workout.

In your Foundation class you’ll cover:

  • Equipment basics — how the reformer works, what the straps, springs, and carriage do, and how to get on and off safely.
  • Safety — the small habits that keep every movement comfortable and controlled.
  • Core principles — breathing, alignment, and the controlled, mindful movement that makes Pilates feel so different from other workouts.

Think of it as the friendly orientation that turns the unfamiliar into the comfortable. Once you’ve done it, every class after — Beginners Reformer, Intermediate Reformer, and beyond — will make so much more sense.

What Is Reformer Pilates, Exactly?

The reformer is a sliding carriage attached to adjustable springs, with straps and bars you push and pull against. It sounds technical, but in practice it’s smooth, supportive, and surprisingly intuitive. The springs provide resistance, so you build strength, but they also assist your movements, which makes reformer Pilates kinder to your joints than many people expect.

If you’d like to go deeper before your visit, our complete guide to reformer Pilates in Riyadh walks through how it works and who it’s for.

What to Wear

Comfort and safety come first, so keep it simple:

  • Form-fitting, comfortable workout clothes. Leggings and a fitted top are ideal.
  • Avoid loose or baggy clothing — flowing fabric can catch in the reformer’s straps and springs, which we want to avoid.
  • Grip socks are required — and the good news is they come with your membership, so you don’t need to buy a pair in advance.

That’s it. No special shoes, no fancy gear.

What to Bring

The studio takes care of almost everything, which means your packing list is wonderfully short:

  • A clear mind. Genuinely the most important item. Give yourself permission to switch off for 50 minutes.
  • Your grip socks.
  • Your workout clothes (or wear them in).

We provide all the equipment, plus a personal towel and water for every member. Just bring yourself.

What to Expect in the Room

Here’s how your first Pilates class tends to unfold.

A warm welcome

You’ll be greeted, shown around, and pointed to your reformer. Our studio is women-only, so the space is calm, private, and easy to settle into. There’s no pressure and no judgment — everyone in the room was a beginner once.

A guided, unhurried start

Your instructor will walk you through setting up your machine, adjusting the springs, and finding your starting position. All our instructors are trained to work with every level, so questions are not only fine — they’re encouraged.

Slow, controlled movement

Pilates is about quality over speed. You’ll move deliberately, focus on your breathing, and notice muscles you didn’t know you had — especially deep in your core. It’s challenging in the best way, never frantic.

Fifty focused minutes

Like all our classes, your Foundation session runs 50 minutes. It’s long enough to feel a real, full-body workout and short enough to fit into a busy day.

How You’ll Feel Afterward

Most beginners describe the same thing: a feeling of being longer, lighter, and more aware of how they’re standing and sitting. You may notice your core the next day — that’s normal and a sign the deep stabilizing muscles got to work. With time, regular practice brings better posture, core strength, flexibility, and that quiet sense of being more at home in your body.

Is Pilates Right for Me?

Almost certainly yes. Pilates for beginners is suitable for all levels, and our classes welcome members aged 16 and up. Whether you’re brand new to movement or returning after a break, the reformer adapts to you. Our instructors are trained for all levels, so you’ll always be guided at a pace that feels right.

After your Foundation class, you can explore the rest of our timetable:

  • Beginners Reformer — your natural next step.
  • Intermediate Reformer — when you’re ready for more.
  • Jump Reformer — a cardio twist on the classic.
  • Chairs & Barrels — variety with different apparatus.
  • Cadillac Mix — a full, varied session.
